Android is adding more of the editing workflow to the phone

Google’s Android 17 creator announcement describes a group of features aimed at recording, improving, and sharing media without moving between as many apps. The most notable AI additions named for Instagram’s Edits app are Smart Enhance for photos and video, and Sound Separation, which can identify elements such as wind, noise, and music so the creator can adjust what is emphasized.

Google also describes Screen Reactions, which records the phone screen and the front-facing camera together to create a reaction clip. It announced improvements to Instagram capture and upload on advanced Android devices, including Ultra HDR support, stabilization, and night-sight integrations. Availability depends on the device, application version, and rollout schedule; the announcement is not a guarantee that every Android 17 phone receives every tool at once.

What sound separation can and cannot do

Sound separation aims to make a selected sound easier to hear by distinguishing it from other elements in a recording. That can help when wind or background music competes with speech. It should not be treated as a perfect restoration process. If the microphone never captured a voice clearly, software may have limited information to recover. Aggressive processing can also create artifacts or make background sounds unnatural.

For an important clip, keep the original recording. Compare the processed version with it using headphones, check for speech distortion, and export a copy rather than replacing the only source file. This makes it possible to return to the unprocessed audio if the enhancement does not suit the material.

APV brings a professional video format to newer phones

Google’s announcement also highlights APV, or Advanced Professional Video, a storage-efficient professional video format developed with Samsung. It lists support on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and vivo X300 Ultra with hardware acceleration on Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, with more devices expected later. That support list is specific to the announcement and may expand as manufacturers ship updates.

A professional capture format can preserve more editing flexibility, but compatibility is part of the workflow. Before recording a long project, test that your editing application, transfer method, and archive process can handle the file. A phone that records a format does not mean every social app or older computer will decode it natively.

A mobile workstation is a system, not one feature

The benefit comes from connecting capture, processing, storage, and publishing. Screen Reactions can shorten setup; AI enhancement can reduce some cleanup work; and APV may target people who want editing headroom. Each also introduces checks: confirm rollout availability, preserve originals, monitor storage, and verify exports before deleting camera files.

Google’s separate Android AISeal announcement concerns the security architecture for private on-device AI workloads, rather than a creator editing feature.
