Canva Magic Video is useful when you already have photos or short clips and want help arranging them into a social-ready edit. Canva says Magic Video can create a 60-second video from uploaded clips or photos, applies a template, transitions, and music, and is included with all Canva plans, including Free. It is an editing and sequencing assistant: bring material you have permission to use instead of expecting it to invent every scene from a text prompt.
Prepare a small, clear set of assets
Start with one idea that can be explained in a minute: a recipe, a product demonstration, a before-and-after, or a quick tip. Choose one to ten photos or clips that support that idea. Use your own recordings, assets you licensed, or material whose license clearly allows your intended use. Avoid collecting unrelated stock clips just to fill the timeline; the sequence should tell one simple story.
For a vertical Reel, frame important people and objects near the middle of each image. Canva notes that automatic reframing is not supported in every case, so a landscape clip may be cropped in a way you do not expect. If a face, label, or product edge matters, inspect the generated crop and replace or reposition the source asset before publishing.
Create the first cut
- Sign in to Canva and start a video design.
- Open the templates area and choose Magic Video.
- Upload or select one to ten clips or photos from your device.
- Give the video a short prompt describing its purpose, tone, or format. For example: “A warm, quick vertical recipe recap with close-up food shots and a calm pace.”
- Choose a style if Canva offers one, then generate the draft.
- Preview the complete sequence. Replace any clip that is irrelevant, poorly cropped, or inconsistent with the story.
- Edit the wording, pacing, transitions, and music. Keep important captions inside the safe area so platform buttons do not cover them.
- Export only after checking the preview on a phone-sized canvas.
Canva also describes a separate prompt-based Video Clip feature. That feature is different from Magic Video: it creates a short synthetic scene from text, while Magic Video organizes media you supply. See the separate Canva AI clip workflow if you want a generated shot rather than an edit of your footage.
Keep the free workflow genuinely free
Magic Video is listed as available on Canva Free, but other features inside the same editor may be paid or consume a limited AI allowance. If Canva shows a crown, upgrade notice, or allowance warning, remove that premium asset or use a free alternative. Do not assume every music track, template, or AI tool is free just because the Magic Video entry point is available at no cost.
Before posting, listen for abrupt music cuts, read every caption aloud, and check that the video does not imply a product result you did not verify. A template can make footage look polished, but it cannot verify claims or clear rights for you. If you plan to monetize the post, make the story, narration, demonstrations, and editing your own. Facebook explains how it evaluates creator originality in this guide to AI-assisted Facebook video and originality.
When this method works best
Magic Video saves time when you have usable footage and need a first edit, a quick vertical montage, or a repeatable format. It is less suitable when you need precise frame-by-frame timing, controlled dialogue, or a fully generated cinematic scene. For those goals, try a short prompt-based clip and then edit it into your own sequence. A no-cost tool can reduce production friction; it does not guarantee reach, rights clearance, or monetization.
